I'm sure you're already considering this but I wonder how the Trent situation affects things... in terms of the balance of the team, do Liverpool need a slightly different profile of left-back if Trent stays than if he goes (assuming Bradley is then first-choice RB; he may not be)? It probably just boils down to getting a good player, to be honest, but it's something that crossed my mind.

Yeah, I’ve said this before to be fair. If Trent goes, the need for our new left-back to be good at inverting into midfield increases imo. Would be risky to go without that quality on either side in the modern game.

Might also be interesting to have a look at Feyenoord‘s LB profiles under Slot, Malacia and Quilindschy Hartman. Slot promoted Hartman from their youth and he eventually nailed down first team place after Slot tried various squad players following the departure of Malacia (Hancko, Lopez, Hendriks).

On the other hand, our RB and DM profile might inform what he is looking for as a LB.

I am new here, so just curious: is this a once a week thing?

Welcome to the team, Simen. Yeah, this series is likely to be once a week. But I’m never too strict on that stuff. I do like to keep things flexible. Depends what happens between now and then.

I'm not sure I'd be understating /under-valuing the defensive side of things in profiling our next LB. Appreciate the data might be a bit 'noisy' but ..you need to defend as a core competency of the role. To start with:

> no. times candidates dribbled past (p/90)?

> no. duels won and % of duels won (p/90)?

> % contribution of the team's clearances, blocks + interceptions (p/90).

Also think Slot may be keen to have someone that's more a hybrid LB /CB ie. can 'slot' into both roles. If you consider that Gomez leaving in the summer is possible /likely, this 'hybrid' ability becomes elevated (at least in my mind). And finally, also believe Slot may be more willing to look at younger candidates (eg. Jorrel Hato) who may not feature so much in the metrics you're using to filter the candidates.

I’m not understating the defensive side. I’m recognising the holes in defensive data, because it’s more than ‘a bit’ noisy.

The best full-back in the Premier League for being dribbled past is Djed Spence. Alexis Mac Allister averages three times as many blocks per 90 as Virgil Van Dijk. The best pairing in the division for clearances plays for Everton.

Also, it’s worth noting that Liverpool right-back is one of the worst defenders around. But he’s still a starter for Slot because he’s special on the ball. Defending is important, yes, but you can coach it. And you defend as part of a unit.

And why wouldn’t younger candidates feature in my analysis? The bar of 1,350 minutes isn’t high.
