I was thinking of Lovren and Skrtel myself earlier in relation to Jarell.
Good players but maybe not quite good enough when the standard is Saliba and Gabriel, Van Dijk and Konate.
If we sign a Huijsen or Hato then it’s hard to see where Quansah is going to get the minutes with us that he needs to improve.
Hopefully he can put this season behind him, but it’s hard to escape the ‘Neco Williams’ feeling that he’s a good academy player who will probably have a good PL career but who just isn’t quite the level we need to rely on him.
Last season Quansah repeatedly stepped in off the bench and played really well, on both sides, highly composed, and with own one real bit of bad luck in the fernadez goal.
So he looked like he was ready to go and would be able to develop and challenge konate without needing to play every week to learn.
This season his confidence has seemed to take a hit and has had periods of real misfortune, so you do wonder if he can learn from a squad role or whether he would benefit from games elsewhere.
The thing is though.. if you are saying Quansah won’t get minutes then any supposedly top level replacement wouldn’t either.. and that brings it’s own challenges
To an extent, but I think if Slot had a Huijsen for example he would trust him in CL games where he didn’t with Quansah, so Ibou or Virg could get the odd break.
We have seen this season that finishing 1st in the group stage didn’t really help us, so there is no need to bust a gut to finish top and flog Ibou and Virg.
So while certainly a prospect like Huijsen or Hato might look at it and think ‘nah I will join Chelsea or whoever and play regularly instead’, I do think for the right player they would get more minutes than Quansah did this season.
I’m always a little wary.. if Quansah had played last season for Brighton at the level he did for us he would have been the £70m young centreback target.. indeed he was, with Newcastle chasing him and offering Gordon as in exchange.
These players, Colwill, Huijson, Hato (LB btw not centreback, too small)
They haven’t been trested at the top level in a possession dominant team where any and every mistake is hyper analysed and the end of the world.
If Fernandez scores a goal from 50m against Bournemouth it’s a worldie, against us it’s a world ending mistake.
Everyone was rather excited about Branthwaite last year, and he looks a great prospect, but he played less the half the passes per 90 Quansah did last season and most of them were hoofs.
There was absolutely zero chance of Braithwaite getting caught carrying the ball forward or misplacing a pass on the halfway line.. so whilst Everton fans may say he’s the new VVD, we had literally no idea if he can pass under pressure, or build attacks from the back and make 80-100 passes per match, or carry the ball through a press..
It’s like Liverpool fans who say Quansah has no pace.. when he has pace but VVD, konates and Gomez are absolutely rapid and he doesn’t have as much as them.
Unless a CB has that get out of jail free pace, the chance they are going to come in and be more trusted or more capable then Quansah probably isn’t that high..
I’m not sure that’s true about Brighton TBH. Quansah showed promise last season, but he wasn’t as good as Huijsen has been this season.
Newcastle weren’t valuing him at the same price as Gordon. He would have been a makeweight in any deal.
He’s a good young player, but there is a huge question over whether he is good enough to play for Liverpool.
Hato has played at both centre back and left back. Certainly at 6ft there is a question mark over his size, but there is no rule that says you have to be 6ft 5. It’s a benefit, but size alone doesn’t even mean you are good in the air.
Branthwaite played in a possession team at PSV to a high standard so the points about him are moot really.
It’s ok to think our prospects might not be quite good enough for us.
Quansah finished last season starting ahead of Konate on form.
Quansah started this season ahead of konate on form.. slot pulled him at half time but it wasn’t an accident he started.
Quansah played more games last season at CB for a title challenging team than Colwill played for Brighton when he was linked with moves away (including to us) and got a bumper new deal at Chelsea.
Branthwaite has never played for a top level possession based team. This isn’t a season at PSV we are talking about.
The difference between Quansah playing 80 passes per game for Liverpool in a high line, press baiting, title challenging team and Branthwaite on loan at PSV in the Dutch league or hoofing it long for Dycheball is massive.
Quansah was not the makewait in the Gordon deal.. he was the target. Newcastle are desperate for a starting CB and Liverpool wouldn’t even consider the swap, they would however have swapped Gomez and paid.
The question isn’t whether Quansah is good enough for a CL team. For Liverpool you are looking at best in the world level CB’s.
And there are very few of them.. and frankly, many of the other options are not going to be any better than Quansah.
Look at Quansah’s nunbers from last year, you are looking at one of the best passing centrebacks in the league.
You are talking about a press resistant, press baiting, relatively two footed, Centreback who is comfortable on the ball at the highest level… there simply aren’t many of them.
And hato… he is a left back, and with Liverpool there is a clear focus on being able to win one on one duals, particularly aerially, and he is too short.
Quansah I think will most likely succeed as a professional but I unfortunately think it won't be at Liverpool. He is having a tough season which happens. People act like Huijsen has played for an impregnable Bournemouth side, yes he impressed for Spain but that was two games where he was highly motivated (see Caicedo/Lavia against us), very good for a game or two is not what we need. Hato plays at a lower level and even Branthwaite plays (both at Ev and PSV). VvD at this age had just joined Celtic.
I think fundamentally all of what is going to happen with Jarrell is going to rely on him mentally. I think this is a blip.
It may be harsh to some, but it is a reality. The instances outlined aren’t speculative or theoretical; they all happened and he was at the center of each situation. I take others’ point about his youth and how he’d be viewed if he was at another club, but the reality of the situation is summed up in one simple question: is he good enough to play for Liverpool? I’d like to think yes, but if you’re producing a major mistake each time out at the centre back position, it is a cause for concern. With so much uncertainty in the coming months, you’d like to think you could rely on your backups, especially with Konaté’s injury record.
It's an important point. He made a great start to his Liverpool career but as a young/any player you have to continue the form and this season hasn't been convincing. You can have the odd mistake but i think this is fair reflection and a cause for concern. As you say, this is Liverpool.
Great angle Josh. Defending can be dangerous for your health. Bad things happen. Sadly Quansah is an accident waiting to happen. Hopefully big summer ahead will see him head off for pastures new.
Great piece. The Bozo Gene is real. Love him as I do, I'd say Konate has it too. No, it's not every game. But it's there, and it doesn't get talked about. I don't know at what point do we cross the line from 'all players make mistakes' to Bozo Gene 😅
After last season I believe in Quansah and that remains despite this season. The question for me is not his ability, but whether he can mentally emerge from this difficult period. Think Lucas Leiva, Jordan Henderson. If he emerges, it could be the making of him. But a period like this can destroy a player, too. A true sink or swim moment.
For example, to me it was madness that people were questioning Ryan Gravenberch after last season. I couldn't believe Munich sold him after just one season. To me, the ridiculous ceiling was always there, it just wasn't fulfilled yet.
No, a high ceiling is not a guarantee it will be fulfilled. But I think Quansah's true levels are miles above what we've seen this season, and there's definitely still time and the potential to unlock it, given his age, and the reality that we don't need him to be a week-in week-out starter at this point in time. He'll have to compete with a new CB joining the club soon, but so be it.
Late to the article so late replying.. Chris brought this up (bozo gene) in the deep dive on redmentv. Konate is an excellent shout. I'm always worried he's going to do something inexplicable every game lol unnecessary foul, not clearing the ball, okey doking it on the ball etc.
He definitely has it and it concerns me post-VVD. Love him as a pro and person, but I don't think he'll reach VVD level as an imperious leader on the pitch.
Very harsh. No doubt that Jarell has made mistakes but is it fair to compare a 21-22yo academy graduate who cost ZERO to veteran pros who arrived for decent fees, e.g. Dejan (25yo, £20m), Simon (25yo, £9m)? The kid needs time to develop.
I don't really get why him costing zero matters here? He plays for Liverpool. That's what matters. So he's either got to be good enough for the level right now, or good enough in the future. And if he's neither, he should be sold.
And I made the point about his age in the piece. Yes, he's got lots of time on his side, but this isn't really an experience thing. My concern is he's got that flammable trait, and that's really not good if you're a centre-back.
I don't think my piece is harsh. He's had a bad season. That's the reality of it.
Fair point on the fee ... you're right that it doesn't matter as much. I guess we might have a different opinion re: mistakes and the age & experience factor. Young, less-experienced players make mistakes but they can reduce them over time through learning & development.
When do you have enough data to discern whether it's "growing pains" vs. a defining trait? After only 16 starts & 1,600 minutes in the league at age 21-22, I think the jury is still out on Jarell and we have a long way to go before deciding to sell him, especially since someone has to fill the 4th CB role in the squad & he's under contract thru 28-29.
More worryingly, last season Bradley played about 10 games, scored 2 own goals, and injured himself making a ridiculously stupid tackle (iirc) ending his own season
Maybe it happens..
VVD has also scored two own goals through deflecting them in off his own players this season too 😂
I think generally, particularly last season, Quansah did incredibly well, particularly coming into a team where he would be expected to make 80+ passes per game, playing on both sides, and looking incredibly composed.
The fernadez goal aside (and that was ridiculously unlucky since he tried the same and missed a couple of times after too!
But I think it's safe to say Virgil doesn't have that flammable trait. I don't think Bradley does, either. It's a different story with Quansah, especially based on what we've seen this term. I agree that he's been stung by moments but even still, it's been a really bad season for him.
I didn’t watch Virgil at 22 so I’m not sure what he was like but I’m pretty sure he wasn’t Liverpool level VVD his whole career…
Admittedly somewhat irrelevant though if the question is whether Quansah is Liverpool level now.
I hope Bradley is the messiah as everyone seems to believe but I also think there’s quite an over reaction to someone just running back and putting sliders in because Trent doesn’t really do that and people think “real defenders” should. Huge potential but not many games
bradley has as many own goals as goals for the senior team 🤷♂️
This article/point does lead to an interesting question in general though.
There is no doubt that the experience of slots squad players this season has led fans/pundits (slot? The players?) to question whether they are good enough.
Now.. that was different under klopp. A clear difference between the manager is klopp inspires that incredible belief in players.
Slot doesn’t seem to do that. So I don’t think for a second we could come from behind 17 times under slot the way we did under klopp.. but then we wouldn’t need to, as we wouldn’t be behind 17times.
Slots treatment of his squad players helped win us the league. But there’s no question it has had an impact on them, their confidence, and who knows, potentially signing other players.. (join the champs vs you either start or don’t play 🤷♂️)
It would appear to me slots methods do not inspire much confidence in his squad players, for anyone, including the players.
But is it a method, or is it down to not “trusting” or liking or believing the players are suited?
Ie Elliot. For me, Macca is our best 10 by a distance. He just can’t press in the 10 role in the 424, in the same way Elliot can’t.
Fortunately for Macca he is also our best 8.
Elliot hasn’t got worse.. does he just not fit so slot doesn’t fancy him whereas klopp probably would have tried to turn him into an 8.. as he already has 🤷♂️
Klopp wouldn’t have ditched Quansah then not used him for 6months
Do we think if we sign Huijson he will get treated any differently to Quansah.. or if he gets the starting shirt will konate not play (on potentially 200k+)
I think the CF conversation is easy - you will be the no1 no9
Rb maybe likewise. Any other position could be tough
Slot has rotated his squad when he’s had players of equivalent level - what he doesn’t seem willing to do is put in a player who lacks what the starter brings to the system.
Jota Nunez and Diaz rotated all season at 9; Diaz and Gakpo at LW; Robertson and Kostas at LB
I’m not sure.. Jota only came out of the team due to injury really. I don’t think Nunez would have got games otherwise.
Gakpo only really came into the team when Diaz moved to 9..
Robbo and Trent did get subbed most often at the beginning of the season… but I’d say robbo and tsimikas were both getting dropped rather than rotated.
I’d suggest the only real rotation has been jones at times, especially with Macca needing a rest.
It’s interesting because slot has said he didn’t really rotate much at Feyenoord either.
But he is a relatively new manager with a strong record at injury prevention and maybe it is something he start doing, or maybe not..

Spot on Josh.
