It was so frustrating to witness Arne's tactics: trying to play over, rather than through, the opponent's press. Same tactical approach he used at Everton, turning it into a contest of who can win aerial duels & 2nd balls (playing in a way that suits our opponent). As with Everton, our best chances came when we played through the press. Just strange.

Of all the teams to rely on long balls against, Newcastle certainly is not that team. And the fact that Liverpool got to that point in the first place amazes me.

I thought Trippier was very clever to head the ball back to Pope every time we tried to play the long ball to Diaz. Would not be surprised if we see other teams adapt this also against Salah and Gakpo.

The last games showcased our main deficiencies: weak progression on the left, weak protection on the right, lack of central creativity and output, weak offensive corners. Should be a straightforward summer for Hughes and Slot.

We have had so many matches where our 1st half performance has been quite poor but this time Slot was unable to work his magic at half time and a 2nd goal killed us.

For those who were at the match did the Geordies create the better atmosphere for their team?

The first clip show Newcastle closing down Virg and not letting him go over the top and forcing Kelleher to, which proved a sound tactic. According to FBRef Allison attempts a little over 9 long passes per90. Kelleher had 21 in this match. Virg was about at his average per90 of 8.5 with 9. Haven’t watched it back but I wonder if this is another area we got out thought and out played.

The Carabao Cup is like the Houston Open and the league is the Masters. Of course, it would be nice to win the Houston Open but everyone knows what's really important.
